Christina Battle, Remedy Toxic Energies : Summoning Circle, January 17, 2022. Participatory project.

Remedy Toxic Energies considers how we might work collectively to remediate years past and imagine new ways for the future. Spreading out from Canada’s top polluting province (Alberta), on January 17, 2022, the 1st Full Moon of 2022 (also MLK Day), 20 hosts virtually brought together over 100 people through summoning circles in an attempt to shift the extractive energies at the core of the region’s economic and cultural ethos into something new.

In order to serve as a summoning circle host, participants had to live within the province of Alberta in Treaties 6, 7 or 8. Hosts agreed to virtually convene a summoning circle on January 17th along with four others. Participants could be located anywhere in the world and were invited by circle hosts. Hosts received instructions and summoning circle kits through the mail to mail out to others in their circle (postage was included to mail materials to those within Canada). Some summoning circles were co-hosted. When kits ran out, instructions were provided for those that wanted to gather their own materials and participate. Each kit contained a zine, a beeswax candle, a package of chamomile tea, a packet of chamomile seeds, and a postcard with a written message from the summoning circle host, and a postcard to send to someone.
